Digestive Physiology

Digestive physiology describes how the body processes food to extract nutrients and remove waste. It begins when you eat, with the mouth breaking down food through chewing and saliva. The food then travels down the esophagus to the stomach, where acids and enzymes further digest it. Nutrients are absorbed mainly in the small intestine, while waste moves into the large intestine for water absorption. Eventually, waste is eliminated through the rectum and anus. This complex system ensures your body receives essential nutrients to function, grow, and repair itself.
