DICER1 gene

The DICER1 gene provides instructions for making a protein crucial for regulating how cells grow and develop by processing small RNA molecules called microRNAs. These microRNAs help control which genes are active or inactive, maintaining cellular balance. When DICER1 has genetic mutations or defects, it can disrupt this regulation, leading to abnormal cell growth and an increased risk of certain tumors and cancers. Mutations in DICER1 are linked to a rare inherited condition called DICER1 syndrome, which predisposes individuals to various tumors, predominantly in the lungs, ovaries, kidney, and eyes.
