DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulation)
Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a serious condition where the body’s blood clotting processes become overactivated throughout the bloodstream. This leads to abnormal clot formation in small vessels, which can block blood flow and cause organ damage. At the same time, the excessive clotting uses up platelets and clotting factors, increasing the risk of severe bleeding. DIC often occurs as a response to severe illnesses like infections, trauma, or cancer. Managing DIC involves treating the underlying cause and balancing blood clotting and bleeding risks through medication and supportive care.
