diaphragm (muscle)
The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle located below the lungs and heart, separating the chest cavity from the abdomen. It plays a crucial role in breathing by contracting and flattening downward, which creates negative pressure in the chest and allows air to flow into the lungs. When you breathe out, the diaphragm relaxes and moves back to its dome shape, helping push air out of the lungs. This muscle works automatically but can also be controlled voluntarily, such as during deep breathing exercises. Its proper function is essential for effective respiration and oxygen exchange.
