Diabetic macular edema
Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a condition that affects people with diabetes, where high blood sugar levels damage blood vessels in the retina—the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. This damage causes blood vessels to leak fluid into the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp vision. The resulting swelling distorts vision, making it difficult to see details clearly. DME is a common cause of vision loss in diabetics and requires medical treatment to reduce swelling and protect eyesight. Managing blood sugar levels and seeking eye care are essential for prevention and control.
