Depth of Knowledge Framework

The Depth of Knowledge (DOK) Framework categorizes tasks based on their complexity and the thinking required to complete them. Developed by Norman Webb, it ranges from Level 1 (recall and basic understanding) to Level 4 (extended thinking, analysis, and complex reasoning). It helps educators design assessments and activities that promote deeper learning by matching tasks to appropriate cognitive demands. In essence, DOK encourages moving beyond simple memorization to engaging students in critical thinking, problem-solving, and applying knowledge in real-world contexts.
