deinstitutionalization

Deinstitutionalization refers to the movement away from placing individuals with mental health issues in large psychiatric hospitals. Starting in the mid-20th century, this shift aimed to provide care in community settings instead, promoting independence and integration into society. The idea was to improve the quality of life for individuals by offering support services closer to home. While it has had positive outcomes, such as reduced stigma and increased access to treatment, it has also led to challenges, including inadequate community resources and support systems, which can leave some individuals without the care they need.
