Deep geological repository
A deep geological repository is a specially designed facility where radioactive waste is stored deep underground, often hundreds of meters below the surface. It is built in stable rock formations to securely contain the waste, preventing radiation from reaching people and the environment. The goal is to isolate hazardous materials over very long periods, often thousands of years, using natural barriers combined with engineered structures. This method offers a safe, permanent solution for managing high-level nuclear waste generated by power plants, reducing potential risks associated with storing such materials on or near the Earth's surface.
