Decree of Tanzimat

The Decree of Tanzimat was a series of reforms introduced by the Ottoman Empire between 1839 and 1876 aimed at modernizing and centralizing government. It sought to create equality among citizens regardless of religion or ethnicity, improve legal and educational systems, and modernize the military and administration. These reforms were motivated by internal challenges and external pressures, intending to strengthen the empire and adapt to 19th-century norms. While they aimed for greater stability and progress, they also ignited debates about tradition and identity within the diverse empire.
