Deci and Ryan's Self-Determination Theory
Self-Determination Theory, developed by Deci and Ryan, explains what motivates people. It suggests that we are naturally driven to grow and seek fulfillment when three basic needs are met: autonomy (feeling in control of our choices), competence (feeling effective and capable), and relatedness (feeling connected to others). When these needs are satisfied, we experience more intrinsic motivation, leading to greater engagement, well-being, and personal growth. Conversely, when these needs are thwarted, motivation decreases, and we may feel disengaged or dissatisfied. The theory helps understand how fostering these needs can promote healthier, more motivated behavior.
