Dazzle camouflage

Dazzle camouflage, used during World War I and II, is a type of disruptive pattern designed to confuse an observer's perception of a ship’s speed, range, and heading. Instead of blending into the environment, it features bold, contrasting geometric shapes and patterns that break up the vessel’s outline. This creates optical illusions that make it difficult for enemy targeting systems or observers to accurately judge the ship’s position or movement, thereby offering a form of passive defense. Dazzle camouflage relies on visual trickery rather than concealment, aiming to protect ships from being accurately targeted by enemy vessels and submarines.
