David Ahenakew

David Ahenakew was a Canadian Indigenous leader and politician, known for his work advocating for First Nations rights. Born in 1933, he served as the chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations and was a Regina city councilor. In 2002, he made controversial remarks that linked Jews to negative stereotypes, leading to widespread criticism and charges of hate speech. Despite this, he later apologized. Ahenakew’s life reflects both his contribution to Indigenous issues and the complexities of handling hate speech allegations. He passed away in 2008, leaving a lasting, if controversial, legacy in Canadian Indigenous history.
