Darius I, also known as Darius the Great, was a prominent king of Persia around 522–486 BCE. He expanded the Persian Empire through military conquests, unifying a vast territory that included parts of Africa, Asia, and Europe. Darius is known for organizing the empire into provinces called satrapies, each overseen by a governor, which improved administration and taxation. He also promoted economic growth, set up an effective postal system, and supported infrastructure like roads and canals, including the famous Royal Road. Darius’s reign strengthened the empire’s stability and prosperity, leaving a lasting legacy as an efficient and influential ruler.
