Darfur Genocide
The Darfur Genocide refers to the mass killing and displacement of non-Arab ethnic groups in Sudan's Darfur region, beginning in 2003. Conflict arose between the government, backed by militia groups known as the Janjaweed, and rebel groups demanding more political rights and resources. The government’s response involved systematic attacks on civilians, resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths and millions displaced. Despite international awareness and condemnation, efforts to stop the violence have struggled over the years, leading to ongoing humanitarian crises and a complex interplay of local and international politics in the region.
