Cyprus dispute
The Cyprus dispute is a long-standing conflict between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots over the island's governance and identity. After independence from Britain in 1960, tensions arose, leading to intercommunal violence and a Turkish invasion in 1974 in response to a Greek-backed coup. This resulted in the island being effectively divided: the Republic of Cyprus controls the south, mainly Greek Cypriots, while the north, primarily Turkish Cypriots, remains de facto under Turkish administration as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognized only by Turkey. Numerous attempts have been made to reunify the island, but a lasting resolution has yet to be achieved.
