Cycle Plays

Cycle plays, also known as mystery cycles, are a type of medieval theatrical performance that depict biblical stories, from Creation to Judgment Day. Originating in the 14th to 16th centuries, these plays were performed by townspeople during religious festivals, often on elaborate floats or platforms. Each play is part of a larger cycle, typically made up of multiple short dramas presented sequentially. They aimed to educate the audience about Christian teachings and engage the community in collective storytelling, blending entertainment with moral and religious instruction. The York Mystery Plays and Coventry Cycle are notable examples.
