Cryopyrin
Cryopyrin, also known as NLRP3, is a protein that plays a key role in the immune system by helping detect infections and cell damage. When activated, it triggers inflammation by releasing signaling molecules called cytokines, particularly interleukin-1 beta. In some individuals, mutations in the cryopyrin gene cause excessive or inappropriate activation, leading to autoinflammatory conditions characterized by symptoms like fever, rash, joint pain, and neurological issues. Treatments often target this overactive inflammatory response, helping to reduce symptoms and prevent organ damage.
