Cromwell's Protectorate

Cromwell's Protectorate (1653–1659) was the period when Oliver Cromwell ruled England as Lord Protector after the English Civil War. It was a kind of military-led government that aimed to stabilize the country following the overthrow of the monarchy and Parliament’s upheaval. Cromwell held significant power, directing the government, military, and foreign policy, while emphasizing religious tolerance for Protestants. The Protectorate tried to create a more structured and disciplined government but faced challenges from royalists and political factions. It ended with Cromwell's death, leading to the monarchy's restoration in 1660.
