Croesus

Croesus was the last king of Lydia, an ancient kingdom in what is now Turkey, known for his immense wealth. He reigned in the 6th century BCE and became a symbol of riches and prosperity. The phrase "rich as Croesus" originates from his legendary wealth, which was so great that it influenced his downfall. Despite his riches, Croesus famously sought the advice of the Oracle of Delphi, ultimately leading him to misjudge his fortunes. His story illustrates the idea that wealth does not guarantee happiness or wisdom.
