Cripps Mission

The Cripps Mission was a 1942 British effort to negotiate India's future during World War II. British officials, led by Sir Stafford Cripps, promised India increased self-governance and constitutional rights if India contributed fully to the war effort. They proposed a legislative assembly and autonomy for Indian provinces, with some states having special privileges. However, Indian leaders felt the proposals didn’t go far enough towards independence and were uncertain about the future. The mission ultimately failed to gain Indian support, highlighting the growing demand for complete independence and leading to increased independence movements.
