Crimean Tatars

Crimean Tatars are an indigenous ethnic group originating from Crimea, a peninsula in Ukraine. Historically Sunni Muslims, they have their own language and rich cultural traditions. Throughout history, they faced periods of exile, particularly during Soviet rule when many were forcibly deported to Central Asia in 1944. Since Ukraine's independence in 1991, Crimean Tatars have worked to preserve their identity, culture, and rights, despite political and territorial challenges. They are known for their resilience and contributions to Crimea’s cultural diversity. Their history reflects a complex interplay of ethnic identity, displacement, and ongoing efforts for recognition.
