COX-2

COX-2 (Cyclooxygenase-2) is an enzyme that plays a key role in producing prostaglandins, chemicals that mediate inflammation, pain, and fever. It is normally present at low levels but becomes active during injury or illness, contributing to the body's inflammatory response. Because of its role in inflammation, COX-2 is a target for certain anti-inflammatory drugs, such as some nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which help reduce pain and swelling. However, selective COX-2 inhibitors are designed to block this enzyme specifically, aiming to relieve symptoms while minimizing gastrointestinal side effects associated with non-selective NSAIDs.
