COX-1
COX-1, or cyclooxygenase-1, is an enzyme in the body that helps produce prostaglandins—small molecules involved in normal functions such as protecting the stomach lining, supporting kidney function, and regulating blood clotting. It is active continuously in many tissues as part of regular maintenance. Because of its role in maintaining these essential processes, COX-1 is considered a "constitutive" enzyme, meaning it is always present and functioning. Certain medications, like some pain relievers, inhibit COX-1 to reduce inflammation and pain, but this can sometimes lead to side effects like stomach irritation.
