Conium maculatum
Conium maculatum, commonly known as poison hemlock, is a highly toxic plant native to Europe and North Africa. It resembles parsley or fern but contains dangerous alkaloids that can cause nerve paralysis, respiratory failure, and death if ingested or improperly handled. Historically, it was used as a poison and in executions, such as the death of Socrates. All parts of the plant are poisonous, and even small amounts can be lethal. Proper identification and caution are essential, as accidental poisoning often occurs when the plant is mistaken for edible herbs.
