Concordat of Bologna
The Concordat of Bologna, signed in 1516 between Pope Leo X and French King Francis I, was an agreement that clarified the relationship between the church and the state in France. It granted the French king greater control over church appointments and finances within France, effectively reducing papal influence. In return, the church retained its spiritual authority and certain privileges. This treaty marked a significant step toward national control over church affairs, influencing how religious and political powers interacted in France for centuries.
