concept of dramatic irony
Dramatic irony occurs when the audience knows more about a situation than the characters do, creating a contrast between their understanding and what is actually true. This device often heightens tension or humor, as viewers anticipate the characters’ reactions once they discover the truth. For example, in a play, if a character is unaware that a surprise party is being planned for them, the audience knows it’s coming. This leads to a deeper emotional engagement, as viewers may feel suspense or amusement while the characters remain oblivious to what's about to unfold.
