Communication Accommodation Theory

Communication Accommodation Theory explains how people adjust their speaking style in conversations to either connect with others or stand out. When they want to build rapport or make others comfortable, they might adopt similar language, tone, or gestures—called converging. Conversely, if they want to emphasize differences or assert independence, they might emphasize their unique style—called diverging. These adjustments influence social bonds and perceptions, helping people navigate interactions based on goals and social context. The theory highlights how language and behavior adapt dynamically to foster understanding or distinction in communication.
