Colombian History

Colombian history spans indigenous cultures, Spanish colonization in the 16th century, and a long struggle for independence, which was achieved in 1819. The 19th century saw the establishment of the Republic, but political instability led to civil wars. The 20th century experienced violence from drug cartels, guerrilla warfare, and paramilitary groups, notably in the 1980s and 90s. Recent decades have focused on peace efforts, with significant strides toward reconciliation and stability.
