Cold Sores (HSV-1)

Cold sores, caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), are small blisters that typically appear on or around the lips. They are contagious and can be spread through direct contact, often activated by stress, illness, or sun exposure. While there’s no cure, antiviral medications can reduce symptoms and healing time. Initial outbreaks may be more severe, with tingling or itching before blisters form. Most people are exposed to the virus in childhood, but not everyone experiences outbreaks. Maintaining good hygiene and avoiding close contact during an outbreak can help prevent transmission.
