Cognitive Theory of OCD

The Cognitive Theory of OCD suggests that the disorder arises from problematic thought patterns and beliefs. Individuals with OCD often experience intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) that cause anxiety. To reduce this anxiety, they develop compulsive behaviors or mental routines. These behaviors temporarily lessen discomfort but reinforce the cycle, making the thoughts seem more threatening over time. Essentially, OCD is driven by distorted thinking that misinterprets normal doubts or urges as dangerous, reinforcing a cycle of anxiety and compulsive actions that become ingrained habits.
