Cognitive Reserve Theory
Cognitive Reserve Theory suggests that some people can better withstand brain changes or damage, such as those from aging or injury, because their brains have built up a "reserve" of mental skills. This reserve is developed through a lifetime of engaging in complex activities like learning, problem-solving, and social interactions. Essentially, individuals with higher cognitive reserve can maintain better thinking and memory functions despite brain wear and tear, delaying the onset or reducing the severity of cognitive decline associated with conditions like dementia.
