Clonal expansion

Clonal expansion is a biological process where a single cell, like a white blood cell, makes identical copies of itself to increase its numbers. This is important for the immune system to effectively fight infections. When the body detects something harmful, certain immune cells rapidly reproduce to create a large team of cells ready to attack the invader. This rapid multiplication helps improve the body's ability to defend itself but can also lead to issues if it happens uncontrollably, as in some types of cancer.
