Clayton Alderfer (ERG Theory)
ERG Theory, developed by Clayton Alderfer, explains human motivation through three core needs: Existence (basic survival needs like food and safety), Relatedness (social connections and relationships), and Growth (personal development and achievement). Unlike traditional theories that see need fulfillment as a strict hierarchy, ERG suggests these needs can be pursued simultaneously and that if higher-level needs aren’t met, individuals may become more focused on satisfying lower-level needs. This flexible approach recognizes that people might regress to simpler needs if their higher-level goals are blocked, providing a more realistic view of motivation.
