Church Committee

The Church Committee, officially known as the United States Senate Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities, was formed in the mid-1970s. It investigated allegations of illegal activities by U.S. intelligence agencies, like the CIA and FBI, particularly regarding surveillance, assassination, and domestic spying. Led by Senator Frank Church, the committee aimed to ensure that intelligence operations respected civil liberties and operated within the law. Its findings led to significant reforms in how intelligence agencies are overseen, promoting greater transparency and accountability in government operations.
