Chum salmon
Chum salmon, also known as dog salmon, is a species of Pacific salmon known for its silver body and adaptability. They are born in freshwater rivers, migrate to the ocean to grow, and return to their natal streams to spawn. Chum salmon are important both ecologically and commercially, providing food for wildlife and humans. They typically have a shorter lifespan than other salmon, usually around 3 to 4 years. During spawning, males develop distinctive vertical stripes and kypes (large hooked jaws), signaling reproductive readiness. Their robust nature and broad distribution make them a vital component of Pacific marine ecosystems.
