Chinese Chan
Chinese Chan is a philosophical tradition that emphasizes direct, experiential insight into the nature of reality through meditation and mindful practice. Originating in China around the 6th century, Chan combines elements of Buddhist teachings with indigenous Chinese thought. Its core approach is to cultivate awareness beyond intellectual understanding, encouraging practitioners to realize their inherent Buddha nature through silent meditation (zazen) and intuitive insight. Chan aims to transcend conceptual thinking, fostering a direct, personal awakening that leads to liberation and compassion. It has influenced many East Asian traditions, notably Zen Buddhism in Japan.
