Chagos Archipelago
The Chagos Archipelago is a group of about 60 islands in the Indian Ocean, belonging to the British Overseas Territory of the British Indian Ocean Territory. It is strategically located and home to Diego Garcia, a major U.S. military base. Historically, many indigenous residents were forcibly removed in the 1960s and 1970s to make way for the military installation, leading to ongoing disputes over sovereignty and the right of return. The islands are also known for their rich marine biodiversity and pristine coral reefs, making them important for both geopolitical interests and environmental conservation.
