CFU-GM

CFU-GM stands for Colony-Forming Unit-Granulocyte, Macrophage. It is a type of precursor cell in the bone marrow that develops into certain white blood cells—specifically granulocytes (like neutrophils) and macrophages—that are crucial for fighting infections. In laboratory testing, CFU-GM helps assess how well bone marrow can produce these immune cells, providing insight into a person’s immune system health. Measuring CFU-GM is important in evaluating bone marrow function, especially in patients undergoing treatments like chemotherapy or stem cell transplants.
