Celiachia (Italian for Celiac Disease)
Celiachia, or celiac disease, is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks the small intestine when gluten—a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye—is consumed. This damage impairs nutrient absorption, leading to symptoms like diarrhea, stomach pain, bloating, fatigue, and weight loss. It can also cause other health issues if left untreated. The only effective management is a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet, which allows the intestine to heal and prevents symptoms. Diagnosis involves blood tests and a small intestine biopsy. Proper medical guidance is important for those affected.
