CCR5
CCR5 is a protein found on the surface of certain immune system cells, acting as a receptor that helps these cells respond to signals and fight infections. It also serves as a doorway for some viruses, like HIV, to enter and infect cells. People with a specific variation of the CCR5 gene (called CCR5-Δ32) have fewer or altered CCR5 proteins, which can make them more resistant to HIV infection. Researchers study CCR5 to better understand immune function and develop treatments for diseases, including HIV/AIDS.
