Carotid Surgery
Carotid surgery is a procedure to treat narrowing or blockage of the carotid arteries, which supply blood to the brain. This narrowing is often caused by plaque buildup (atherosclerosis), increasing the risk of strokes. The surgery typically involves either carotid endarterectomy—where the surgeon removes the plaque from the artery—or carotid artery stenting, which places a small mesh tube to keep the artery open. The goal of the surgery is to restore proper blood flow to the brain, reducing the risk of stroke and related complications. It is usually performed by vascular surgeons in a hospital setting.
