Carnival Theory

Carnival Theory is a social concept suggesting that during certain festivals or events—like carnivals—ordinary social norms and hierarchies are temporarily overturned. People often engage in playful, exaggerated behaviors, mocking authority, and disguising identities. This temporary "world upside down" allows communities to release tensions, challenge conventions, and renew social bonds. Once the event ends, normal order resumes, reaffirming societal structure. Essentially, Carnival Theory explains how these festivals serve as a safe outlet for expressing social frustrations and reevaluating norms in a controlled, communal setting.
