Carlism

Carlism is a Spanish political movement that emerged in the 19th century, rooted in a dispute over the rightful succession to the Spanish throne. Supporters, called Carlists, upheld traditional values, Catholicism, and regional autonomy, opposing liberal and centralist reforms. They believed in maintaining an absolute monarchy under a specific line of succession based on a traditionalist interpretation of royal inheritance. The movement led to several civil wars in Spain and influenced regional identities, especially in areas like Navarre and the Basque Country. Although their political influence waned in the 20th century, Carlism remains a notable strand of conservative and monarchist thought in Spain.
