Camisards

The Camisards were French Protestant rebels in the early 18th century who fought against the Catholic monarchy’s efforts to suppress their Huguenot faith. Following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, which granted religious tolerance, many Protestants in the Cévennes region resisted forced conversions and Catholic dominance. They organized guerrilla-style warfare, known as the Camisard Rebellion (1702–1704), seeking religious freedom. Ultimately, their uprising was crushed, but their resistance highlighted ongoing religious tensions in France and contributed to later reforms promoting religious tolerance.
