Camels are large, sturdy mammals adapted to arid environments like deserts. Known as “ships of the desert,” they can travel long distances without water by efficiently conserving it through specialized body features—such as their hump(s) storing fat, which can be converted to water and energy. They have tough, thick skin to protect against extreme heat and sand, large feet to walk on loose surfaces, and the ability to eat thorny plants. Camels are essential for transportation, carrying goods and people, as well as providing milk, meat, and other resources in desert communities.
