California Youth Authority
The California Youth Authority (CYA), established in 1941, was a state agency responsible for the rehabilitation and correction of juvenile offenders. It operated a network of youth facilities aimed at providing education, treatment, and vocational training for young individuals facing legal issues. The CYA focused on helping these youths reintegrate into society, emphasizing rehabilitation over punishment. However, over the years, it faced criticism regarding its effectiveness and conditions within its facilities. In 2005, the CYA was restructured, and its functions were transferred to the California Division of Juvenile Justice, which continues to focus on rehabilitating young offenders.
