California Republic

The California Republic was a short-lived, unrecognized independent state declared in 1846 during the Bear Flag Revolt, when settlers in California opposed Mexican control and proclaimed independence. This movement was part of the broader context of territorial disputes and the westward expansion of the United States. Although the republic lasted only a few weeks before U.S. military forces took control, the Bear Flag became a symbol of California's identity and later influenced its state flag. Ultimately, California was admitted to the U.S. as the 31st state in 1850, transitioning from a rebellious territory to a recognized part of the nation.
