Byzantine humanism
Byzantine humanism refers to the intellectual movement during the Byzantine Empire that emphasized a revival of classical Greek and Roman studies, literature, and philosophy. Scholars sought to preserve and understand ancient texts, promoting education and scholarly inquiry. Unlike later Renaissance humanism, Byzantine humanism maintained a strong religious focus, integrating classical ideas with Christian beliefs. It played a key role in transmitting classical knowledge to both the Eastern Orthodox world and later to Western Europe, helping to lay foundations for the broader humanist movements that emerged during the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
