Burji Mamluks

The Burji Mamluks were a powerful group that ruled in Egypt from the late 13th century until the early 16th century. They originated from enslaved soldiers, known as Mamluks, who seized power after the defeat of the Ayyubid dynasty. Their rule is noted for significant architectural achievements, such as the construction of impressive mosques and buildings in Cairo. They also established a strong military and expanded trade. The name "Burji" refers to their base in the Cairo Citadel, which features distinctive towers (or "burj" in Arabic). Their dynasty ended when they were conquered by the Ottomans in 1517.
