British Indian Medical Service

The British Indian Medical Service (BIMS) was a healthcare organization established during British rule in India, primarily to provide medical care to British military personnel and colonial officials, as well as local populations. Formed in the late 19th century, it comprised British doctors and Indian medical practitioners. BIMS played a crucial role in public health initiatives, disease control, and medical education in colonial India. It significantly influenced India’s healthcare system and medical practices, ultimately shaping the evolution of healthcare services in the region post-independence. The service was disbanded after India gained independence in 1947.
